Keyword
Research
This is a brief explanation of the keyword research process.
The more potential customers understand about how these
recommendations are generated, the more confidence they can
have in them.
The database we currently use for researching keywords
contains about 400-500 million recent searches. This database
provides, among other things, a total count of the number of
times a specific keyword appears in the database. It also
extrapolates the data to predict a daily number of searches for
that keyword for all search engines. Based on this data, the
number of daily searches is currently nearly 600 million. This
service is the standard in the search engine optimization (SEO)
industry.
Here's the basic process we currently use to select the most
appropriate and relevant keywords for a client.
The initial keyword list must come form the client,
hopefully with a great deal of input form their customers.
Beginning with this list, we search for synonyms.
Using chocolate as an example of a keyword, synonyms might
be food, beverage, candy and deep brown. We then search
laterally to find more related words. For example, the words
cocoa, truffles and fudge are related to chocolate but are not
synonyms. If the new words are highly relevant, we use them as
subjects of further lateral and synonym searches.
Assuming an average initial list of 20-50 potential
keywords, the completed research list can be quite lengthy.
Eventually we'll reduce the list to the most relevant phrases.
These phrases are then submitted to the database to determine
how often these keywords were actually used by searchers.
Because the database predicts the number of daily searches for
any given keyword or key phrase, the final list of keywords can
then be ranked words by the volume of daily searches.
The results of this research reveal the keywords that have
the highest probability for success.
